Egyptian Guys in Cairo Dancing baladi on the Nile
What we in the West call “Belly Dance”, is a theatricalized version of one of the social dances done throughout the region of tghe Middle east and North Africa. Its done by men, women, young and old. Its only the professional version done in night clubs that is considered by most to “a woman’s job”. I saw many guys who were good dancers, however, filming was difficult because of all the people moving around. A word of caution: Women object very strongly to being taped or photographed. I stopped filming when the girl got up because she had just riffed a guy a new one on the previous boat for taking her picture! The party boats across from the Hilton are cheap. For 2 Egyptian pounds, (34 cents US), they take you on a 15 min spin. They offer the local population, of families means of affordable entertainment, and the young guys a fun way to blow off some steam. Because of the low cost most people spend the night boat hoping. Gives a great opportunity to see some good, (and not so good), dancing in its native setting.
